A Sad Gray Day in Geek City

April 19, 2011 By Ken Gibson Leave a Comment

It's a gray, rainy day in Chicago and somehow that's fitting my mood right now. Elisabeth Sladen (aka Sarah Jane Smith) died after a battle with cancer today. As a kid I had a crush on Sarah Jane. Heck, I had a crush on her as an adult when I saw her again in the new Doctor Who series just a few years back. I understand an actress is not the character she plays, yet I can't … [Read more...] about A Sad Gray Day in Geek City

The Chicago Code – Episode 3: Gillis, Chase and Baby Face

February 22, 2011 By Mark Draughn 2 Comments

Now that Steve Graham has given me a nice shout-out in mentioning that I've been blogging about The Chicago Code, I feel obligated to say something about last night's episode. Actually, I'll start with my wife's review: "That one didn't suck." Yeah, this was a pretty good episode. It made better use of the modern television trick of mingling two separate stories. The Chicago Code – Episode 2: Hog Butcher

February 16, 2011 By Mark Draughn Leave a Comment

I finally got around to watching the second episode of The Chicago Code last night. The opening titles and music were different, which confirms that the first episode was a true pilot, created long before the next episode. Otherwise, my impression is about the same: It's not great, but I could get used to it, and they do a great job of filming my home town. The story is still … [Read more...] about The Chicago Code – Episode 2: Hog Butcher

The Chicago Code – First Thoughts

February 9, 2011 By Mark Draughn 3 Comments

I took a look at the pilot episode of The Chicago Code last night and...didn't hate it. It's got some of potential. Minor spoilers follow. (As I write this, you can watch the pilot episode for free here.) It's not what I was hoping for. That's because what I was hoping for was The Wire: Chicago, and that was never going to happen. I'm sure other people could make a crime show … [Read more...] about The Chicago Code – First Thoughts

Skyline – Review

November 15, 2010 By Mark Draughn Leave a Comment

I went to see the movie Skyline yesterday. I should have known better. The distributor has been advertising it like crazy, but as the release date approached, they didn't preview it for movie critics. That usually means they're trying to hide how much their movie sucks. And with a Metacritic score of 28 and 10% on the Tomatometer, the signs were not promising. Still, there … [Read more...] about Skyline – Review
